The Nolan Richard Scholarship

This Scholarship is awarded to the Year 13 student placing highest in the graduating class and who has additionally committed to pursuing a baccalaureate degree in one of the fields of pure science, applied science or engineering. It is worth $4,500.00 per year for at least three years, or for a maximum of four years. The continuation of this scholarship is dependent upon the candidate's academic attainment at University.

Applications open on 1st September and close on 30th September each year. Late applications will NOT be accepted.

It is presented annually at the Senior Academic & Culture Prize Giving ceremony.

Mr Richards is an ex-pupil of Kaitaia College. He graduated from Auckland University in 1952 with a M.Sc (First Class Honours). He obtained a Ph D. in Physical Chemistry in 1954.

While working in the Reynolds Metals Research laboratories at Muscle Shoals, Alabama on the Tennessee River, Mr Richards built equipment to measure the anodic over voltage for the electrolysis of alumina.

He is depicted pictured below as Manager of the Manufacturing Technology Laboratory of Reynolds Metals Company, a position he held for twenty years.

Braithwaite Thompson (Foundation Dux Award) Scholarship

In 1947, Bob Covich and Ray Thompson started their secondary education at Kaitaia District High School, when it was then combined with the Primary School on the Church Road site. A few months later the secondary department moved to its present site and all-new buildings comprised of six classrooms, a science lab, a manual training block and a domestic science block. It had about 180 pupils and was know as the Kaitaia High School Sixty years ago, in 1951, the name was changed to Kaitaia College. Bob and Ray became "Dux equal" so, by the quirk of a name change, became the "Foundation Duxes" of the College. By then the college roll was about 280 students.

Bob and Ray then completed their BE degrees in Civil Engineering at Auckland and later both finished part-time B.Sc Degrees. In 1960-61, Ray did a Masters Degree specializing in earthquake engineering, at the California Insitute of Technology, helped by a Fullbright Graduate Student Award, a tuition scholarship from Caltech, and an Award from Smith-Mundt Foundation of New York.

In 2006 Joan and Ray Thompson set up the Braithwaite-Thompson Educational Fund, Braithwaite being Joan's maiden name. She was born in Dunedin and grew up there and in Invercargill and trained as a primary school teacher in Dunedin. They married in January 1962.

The main purpose of their Educational Fund is to make annual awards to International (foreign) students to undertake "innovative graduate research", in any speciality, in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Auckland. In 2011, five awards had been made to Doctoral students and three to Masters students. The first PhD student was capped in 2010 and the second early in 2012. Two Masters students had completed their studies and been capped.

In setting up the Educational Fund, allowance was made for other awards to be made of up to 20% in value of those for the Engineering Faculty. In 2011, Joan and Ray decided to make a further award to be known as the Braithwaite-Thompson Kaitaia College Foundation Dux Award, "to assist and encourage a deserving student to pursue advanced education." This award was originally valued at $600.00. In setting up this award, Joan and Ray paid tribute to Bob Covich, who was a valued family friend. Bob died just short of his 60th Birthday.

Joan and Ray used to travel to Kaitaia every year to personally present this award. Sadly, Ray passed away suddenly in 2018. This Scholarship is now valued at $1,500.00, and continues to be offered by Joan & Ray's Whānau.
