Taha Whanau

Haka Wero is a culmination of students, teachers, and the community celebrating the unique identity which is Kaitaia College. The direction Kaitaia College is heading, is a place that promotes culture, but more importantly, it is the recognition it has with the five Iwi of Te Hiku O Te Ika.

All the students and teachers from Kaitaia College’s five Whanau Groups (Buck, Miller, McMahon, Ngarimu and Trigg), come together where upon each Whanau Group have to sing the School Waiata and perform the School Haka twice.

In a friendly, but underlying competitive setting, students are able to come together and plan, lead and direct how the waiata and haka are to be performed. Recognition to all those students who shape this is noted by staff, and on the day it is really great to see the results of this hard work. Staff and whanau loyalties are paraded in the various Whanau Group colours leading into their performances. A shift to Te Kapua has definitely been a benefit for the day.

Haka Wero is about the values which underpin the future for students, staff, and community. The school ethos is based on MAHI TAHI:

M - Manaaki
A - Achievement
H - Hau Kāinga
I - Integrity
Tahi - One Whanau

Newsletter 2018

As Buck House Captains, Akesa, Jurney, Sidney, Ruia and I all said last year that we were gonna take out Haka Wero 2018. Even before being chosen as house captains we were determined to win. We faithfully turned up to practices keen and eager to take out Haka Wero 2018. But there’s always one but, we had a house group full of Year 11s down, this brought down our chances a little. On the bright side we continued to teach our house group as best as we could. It was getting closer and closer to the day and Buck House was getting better and better.

Come challenge time we were shocked by our competition of Miller who was up first. They did good, next up was us, the adrenaline rush took over and before we knew it we had done the best performance all year. Us 5 house captains couldn't be more proud of everyone. We then watched the next 3 house groups and they were very talented. McMahon definitely showed our kura another level of Haka.

As results were being said we thought "dang it" the other house groups performed extremely well. As Whaea Morgana went from 5th to 1st we as House Captains sat anxiously waiting to hear our placing. She had called up to 3rd Place and Buck House had still not been called. Top two again for Buck how outrageous. Patiently as she called for a drum roll she yelled "In first place we have TE RANGIHIROA!!!". Almost in tears House Captains of Buck are huddling together so proud of our achievement.

We give thanks to all buck house group for putting in hard work and achieving Haka Wero Champions for 2018.
